Beginning as a small fundraising event called "The Angel Island Adventure" in 1996, the National Brain Tumor Society's Brain Tumor Walk has grown into a national, annual event raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for brain tumor services and research.
Each year over 210,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor, equaling about 575 people every day. Brain tumor survivor Chris Kuchera Hemker first organized the walk to help address this widespread disease by gathering a small group of supporters to walk on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay Area.
"Donations from the Brain Tumor Walk enable us to fund innovative research and support for those already coping with a brain tumor diagnosis. The walk also raises awareness that brain tumors can strike anyone, and there is still no cure," said N. Paul TonThat, Executive Director of the National Brain Tumor Society.
This year marks the ninth annual San Diego Brain Tumor Walk, and over 700 walkers are anticipated to raise about $100,000. The 5K event will be held on Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon in Mission Bay Park.
"Brain tumors have no boundaries. They affect people of all ages, ethnicities and health histories. Someone in your campus community could be facing this challenge right now," said Janet T., brain tumor survivor and National Brain Tumor Society volunteer.
For many, a brain tumor disease is a very personal, painful time, as sufferers can experience drastic mood swings and personality changes. One USD community member in particular recalls the hardships brain tumors can cause.
"I'm walking in honor of my former boss, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who lost his brave battle with brain cancer a year ago," said Melissa Wagoner, USD Director of Media Relations. "He was positive, relentless and a true role model. San Diego's Brain Tumor Walk is a wonderful way to honor him, and all those affected by this terrible disease."
Those who wish to participate in the walk can register either as teams or as individuals at SDWalk.org, or by calling toll free 1-866-455-3214. The registration fee is $50. Inquiries about volunteering the day of the event can be sent to SDWalk@braintumor.org.
