Roller coaster ride continues for Toreros tennis

The Toreros men’s tennis team has faced a diversity of adversity in the 2010 season. They started the season 2-0 only to get humbled by the University of Southern California, the top ranked team in the country at the time. The Toreros then surged back after the embarrassing 7-0 loss to USC and won five of their next six matches against a majority of teams that were nationally ranked. Full story

Toreros men's tennis opens up spring play with wins

Torero's improve their overall record to 3-3 thanks to the experience of Dean Jackson

The new doubles duo of sophomore Dean Jackson and senior Chris Coetzee set the tone early as the Toreros defeated the University of Hawaii during last Tuesday's home opener. Jackson and Coetzee came out poised and focused as they easily defeated Hawaii's tandem of Jeff Fitch and Leo Rosenberg, 8-3. Full story

Tennis splits on road swing

The USD men’s tennis team faced another difficult week en route to the WCC tournament that is only two weeks away. Trying to gain some momentum for the conference tournament, the Toreros came up just short in a thriller against San Diego State in the annual city championship last Wednesday. But even though the Toreros valiant comeback was overcome with defeat, head coach Brett Masi was pleased with his team’s effort. Full story

USD tennis star Dean Jackson is a long way from home. The tennis star hails from Soest, Germany, a town that is three hours from Amsterdam and five hours from Paris. Nonetheless, Jackson has grown to love San Diego, as he is thriving as USD's most valuable player.

The Torero men's tennis team ventured into the state of Utah last week to take on the two most prominent collegiate athletic programs in the state, Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. The USD men's tennis team came into the week ranked 58th in the national ITA poll despite losing four out of their last five matches.

The USD men's tennis team spent last Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, where the second ranked Trojans had no trouble dismantling USD as they achieved a 6-1 victory in a dual match at their home stadium.

Jackson shines in Texas tourney

The Torero men's tennis team headed east to Midland, Texas to participate in the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational this past weekend. Senior Dean Jackson backed up his number one seed and took home the men's single title by defeating Jackson Maros Horny of the University of Maryland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-7.

Jackson's journey to  the tournament's pinnacle included victories over Harry Fowler of Rice in the round of 32 and Ben Dunbar of New Mexico in two games in the round of 16.

Torero athletes light the night for Haggy

The staff and students of USD Athletics walked to cure leukemia last year in support of men's tennis coach Tom Hagedorn, who was a survivor at the time. They walked again this year, but this time in memory of Coach "Haggy". Coach Haggy was one of the most beloved members of USD Athletics.

 A few days ago I was prancing around my house pretending I was Kobe throwing down dunks and dominating with a refined back to the basket game. When I tripped over a tennis racket, I literally came crashing back down to reality. I was no longer Kobe Bryant, I was Ryan Sidhoo; the man on the floor wondering who leaves a tennis racket and tennis bag in the middle of the hallway?  If you answered a USD tennis player, you answered correctly.

Campus bids farewell

After a courageous 18 month battle with leukemia, USD men's tennis coach Tom Hagedorn, passed away last Saturday morning at 43 years old. His wife, Melissa, and sister, Sandy, were by his side. Hagedorn coached for 11 seasons at USD where he led the Toreros to four straight NCAA appearances from 2003 to 2006 and 10 straight winning seasons.

To say the past week has been tough on the Toreros men's tennis team would be an extreme understatement. On March 21, Tom Hagedorn, the men's tennis head coach, lost his courageous 18-month battle with leukemia. All of the tennis players, athletic trainers and many other students and athletes attended a emotional Celebration of Life gathering held on the Eagan Plaza in front of the Jenny Craig Pavilion last Wednesday.

No love: Tennis season ends on low note with loss

The match against UCLA was cancelled due to rain last Tuesday. The Toreros men's tennis team could not help but think that their season could end just as abruptly as that storm rolled in. If their play did not improve in the WCC tournament, USD tennis would put their entire season in the hands of the NCAA at-large selection committee.

Toreros run out Rebels, wrangle Gauchos

The USD men's tennis team looked stronger than ever in their two matches this weekend, as they went undefeated with victories over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels on Sunday. These two wins improved the Toreros' overall record to 5-1 and kept their octane levels running on high.

Men's tennis succeeds in WCC

Sometimes it is hard to break tradition. The Toreros dropped their final match of the season at the WCC Conference Tournament at Barnes Tennis Center as Pepperdine pulled through with a 4-1 victory winning the conference for the 19th straight year. The Toreros started the day off strong as they kept every doubles match close and competitive.
